Bible Text: Matthew 17:1-2
Have you ever been afraid of something you cannot see? Maybe you have heard stories about evil spirits, fallen angels, or dark powers. Many people are curious about the hidden world. Others are afraid of it. But there is one truth we must remember: Jesus Christ has authority over every power, both seen and unseen!
The Bible shows us that Jesus did not come only to save us from our sins. He also came to defeat the enemy and give us a life filled with hope.
A Declaration That Changed History
In Matthew 16, Jesus took His disciples to Caesarea Philippi. In that region, there were many temples dedicated to false gods. There was also a cave of Pan, a place some people connected as an entrance to the world of the dead. In the middle of that place, Jesus asked His disciples: “But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). Peter answered: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16).
What a powerful declaration! Peter recognized that Jesus was no ordinary man. He was the Son of God, the promised Savior. Jesus then said that He would build His Church and that the gates of Hades would not overcome it. In other words, the kingdom of darkness would not have the final word. Jesus Christ had come to defeat it.
The Mount of Transfiguration
Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. The Bible tells us that Jesus was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. The disciples were seeing the glory of God!
The Bible does not tell us exactly which mountain it was. Many believe it was Mount Tabor. Others think it may have been Mount Hermon, near Caesarea Philippi.
Mount Hermon was known for its great height. It also had a long history of worshiping false gods. The Canaanites worshiped Baal-Hermon. Later, the Greeks connected the region with the god Pan. The ancient Book of Enoch also tells of fallen angels who came down on Mount Hermon. Although this book is not part of the Bible, it helps us understand some of the ideas people knew during that time.
We cannot be certain that Jesus chose Mount Hermon for these reasons. However, we can see a powerful truth in the Transfiguration: The glory of Jesus Christ is greater than any power of darkness!
Moses, Elijah, and the Voice of God
While Jesus was on the mountain, Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with Him. Moses represents the Law. Elijah represents the Prophets. Both gave testimony that Jesus was the promised Messiah.
The whole Bible tells us about Jesus. It tells us about His birth, His death on the cross, His resurrection, and His return.
But that was not all. A voice from a cloud said: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” (Matthew 17:5). God the Father confirmed who Jesus was!
The disciples heard the voice of God and felt great fear. It is not hard to imagine how they felt. But what they saw reminds us that Jesus is not just a teacher. He is the beloved Son of God. He is the King of Glory.
Jesus Has Already Defeated the Enemy
The Transfiguration shows us the glory of Jesus. But His victory did not end on that mountain. Jesus went to the cross. There, He gave His life for our sins. Colossians 2:15 tells us that Christ disarmed the spiritual powers and authorities and triumphed over them through the cross. The cross looked like a defeat, but it was a victory!
Jesus defeated sin and death. And through Him, we can live with hope. This does not mean we will never have problems. It does not mean we will never feel fear, tiredness, or sadness. It means we are not alone. When our problems seem like giants, we can call on the Lord. When we feel our strength running out, we can trust in Christ. Our hope is not in our own strength. Our hope is in Jesus Christ.
The King of Glory Is With You!
Maybe today you are facing a battle that no one else knows about. Maybe you are tired, worried, or overwhelmed by the things happening in your life. Remember what the disciples saw on that mountain. Jesus Christ is greater than any enemy. His authority is greater than any power of darkness.
You do not have to live controlled by fear. You can give your life to Jesus, trust in His power, and keep moving forward.
Philippians 2:10-11 reminds us that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
The King of Glory has come! And if Jesus Christ is your Lord, you can live with this confidence:
No matter how great the battle may be, Jesus Christ is greater!
